Siquijor Travel Guide: A Bird’s-Eye View of the Island

siquijor travel guide - overview

Located in Visayas’ Negros Island Region (NIR), Siquijor is one of the smallest provinces in the Philippines. It’s located south of Cebu and Bohol and east of Dumaguete City.

The province has always been associated with pre-colonial mystic traditions—it's one of the island’s draws. In the 1560s, Siquijor was known to Spanish conquistadors as Isla del Fuego or Island of Fire since fireflies lit the island’s molave trees.[1]

The island has a tropical climate, which means it sees wet and dry seasons every year. The best time to visit Siquijor is during its dry season, which runs from November to May. Enjoy sunny days on the island’s beaches within this period.

How to Get to Siquijor

How to go to Siquijor from Manila? First, fly to Dumaguete. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines operate flights bound for the said city. Travel time takes around 1.5 hours.

How to go to Siquijor from Dumaguete? Ride a ferry from the Port of Dumaguete bound for Siquijor Port. Depending on your budget, you can choose between a fastcraft or RORO.

A trip via fastcraft takes around 50 minutes while a RORO journey can take between 1.5 and two hours. Ferry operators include Oceanjet, Montenegro, and Aleson.

Overall, the Manila to Siquijor travel time takes around four to five hours, including transfers and wait times.

How to Get Around Siquijor

Get around the island easily with the following transportation options:

  • Jeepney - This will allow you to save money since the fare is cheap.
  • Tricycle - Charter a trike for a more private trip. You can even book a trike tour to take you to the island’s most popular destinations.
  • Bike rental - If you have a license and want to take the trip at your own pace, rent a motorbike.
  • Van and multicab rental - Vans and multicabs for hire are ideal for traveling groups.

How Much to Budget for a Siquijor Trip

This will depend on your activities and length of stay. But if you follow the recommended Siquijor itinerary of three days, you may need to shell out between ₱5,000 and ₱8,000. This budget includes accommodation, tour packages, meals, and transfers from and to Dumaguete.

Take note that flights, pasalubong, and other miscellaneous expenses are excluded from the said budget range.

If you’re feeling adventurous, snorkel in Tubod Marine Sanctuary located near Coco Grove Beach Resort. Under the clear waters, you’ll see various marine life forms like corals, fish, and turtles.

📍 Paliton Beach

siquijor travel guide - paliton beach

Still in San Juan, Paliton Beach is one of the most popular Siquijor tourist spots for those who want to enjoy peace and quiet. Its sands are white and fine while the waters are clear and sparkling. The place may remind you of Boracay, although it's nowhere near as crowded.

Towering palm trees line the shoreline, giving the location a truly tropical vibe. Go here in the late afternoon so you can witness the dramatic sunset.

📍 Cambugahay Falls

siquijor travel guide - cambugahay

This Siquijor travel guide won’t be complete without the iconic Cambugahay Falls. Located in Lazi, this natural attraction has several levels of falls cascading through large rocks and stony walls. Its pools boast milky blue water that will refresh and cool you down after your short hike.

If you simply want to relax, float in the water or lounge in the raft. But if you’re an adrenaline junkie, try one of the rope swings in the area.

📍 Lazi Church and Convent

Not too far from Cambugahay falls is the historic Lazi Church and Convent. This is one of the best places to visit in Siquijor whether you’re a religious person or a history nerd.

Built in the 1880s, Lazi Church, formally known as the San Isidro Labrador Church, showcases baroque aesthetics. It was also declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.

Just across the church is a massive and mysterious convent. Inside, get a glimpse of the olden times through its religious artifacts and antique wooden floors and walls.

📍 The Old Balete Tree

Also found in Lazi, the Old Balete Tree is a must-visit destination for those who want to inject mysticism into their trip. With its colossal body, towering height, and countless tendrils, the 400-year-old tree is a spectacle to behold.

At a natural pool at the foot of the tree, dip your feet and let the tiny fish feed on your dead skin. There’s also a store in the area that sells souvenirs and even love potions.

This spot is also perfect for adventurous vacationers. There are various cliff-jumping spots, with the highest point reaching 40 feet.

Probably the best thing about Pitogo Cliff is that it’s a well-kept secret. Not a lot of tourists know about it, making it a great spot for those who want to chill.

📍 Tulapos Marine Sanctuary

Can’t get enough of snorkeling? The Tulapos Marine Sanctuary in Enrique Villanueva is a must-visit Siquijor attraction.

Close to the shore, there are several mangroves that serve as home to different marine species. If you go further, you’ll spot seagrass beds where mollusks, starfish, and colorful fish (clownfish in particular) live. The Tulapos Marine Sanctuary is also home to the likes of giant clams, sea turtles, barracudas, and black tip reef sharks.

📍 Cantabon Cave

Found close to the center of Siquijor, Cantabon Cave offers spelunkers a thrilling playground. As a live cave,[2] this destination features an underground river, stalactites, stalagmites, white rocks, and other formations.

To reach this tourist spot, ascend the province’s mountainside. Exploring the cave takes two to three hours, depending on your pace.

📍 Dumaguete City

siquijor travel guide - dumaguete

While not part of the island, Dumaguete City also makes a good stop in your Siquijor itinerary. After all, this city will be your jump-off point. Stay a day or two here before or after your trip to Siquijor.

If you have only a day to spend in Dumaguete City, visit the beautiful Silliman University or stroll along the scenic Rizal Boulevard. Head to Sans Rival Bistro for some comfort food and silvanas.

Tips to Make Your Siquijor Trip More Fun

siquijor travel guide - tips

Follow these simple tips to make your island vacation more memorable and comfortable:

  • Use sunscreen. You’ll be lounging and swimming a lot at the beach, so make sure your skin is protected.
  • Bring a dry bag. Whether you’re visiting Cambugahay Falls or spelunking at Cantabon Cave, a waterproof bag will keep your electronics, cash, and clothes dry.
  • Bring enough cash. Major hotels and restaurants may accept credit and debit cards. However, smaller shops accept only cash payments.
  • Book a hostel if you’re staying only for the night. If you’re making a side trip to Siquijor from Dumaguete, save money by staying at a hostel. After all, you’ll be out and about most of the day.
  • Pre-book your tour online. Truth be told, many locals operate tours on the island. But for security and safety purposes, book a package via online platforms like Klook. If that’s not possible, ask your hotel if they operate their own tours.
  • Pack anti-motion sickness meds. You'll be traveling via ferry from Dumaguete to Siquijor and vice versa. This will help you deal with dizziness and nausea.[3]

Final Thoughts

Also called the Healing Island, Siquijor lives up to its moniker, as its natural beauty and tranquility heal the soul.

As you've read in this Siquijor travel guide, getting here can be quite challenging given the length of the journey. But once you explore the island, you’ll realize it’s all worth it.
